I’m a whiz at using computers, but an idiot with this kind of hardware stuff. I’ve tried searching online, but am evidently not using the right keywords. I subscribe to Cox Cable with internet access. [The cable TV part is HD, if that matters.] I’ve just bought a laptop and want to use it on the desk next to my television. The laptop has an internal 56K modem [a Conexant HDA D100 MDC V.92], and also has a phone jack, a network jack, and three USB ports. Are there any adaptors or cable splitters that will allow me to plug the coaxial cable from the wall into it and then run lines to the digital cable box AND my laptop? The technician I spoke to at Cox Cable wasn’t very knowledgeable — the only guidance he could provide was to say that I’d need something that’s 1 ghz or higher. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I consider myself a pretty tech-savvy guy, but this internet crap baffles me completely, no matter how much i research it. I have cable internet through Comcast, with digital cable and phone service. (we only have the phone service because that makes it cheaper.) When they first installed it, they gave us two devices. One is a black box, which is hooked up via phone line and coaxial cable, and has a backup battery. I assume this provides the phone service, but I don’t really know. The other is our internet modem, with a wireless antenna. It is Netgear brand, white, and is hooked up via the coaxial cable as well, and has ethernet ports which are hooked up to the Xbox and my computer. We have always had the s**ttiest of service, that is either slow, or shuts off intermittently. I recently read an article that recommends buying your own modem to reduce costs, and I’ve also heard Netgear modems suck, so I wanna figure out where I should begin with this. Also, I hate the router/modem’s (they’re the same thing, right?) settings. They provide very little options. Only port forwarding/blocking, wireless settings, parental controls, and DMZ. All of these other advanced options that I assume should be there, such as UPnP are absent. What am I missing here?
