(To make Skype calls, you must open a Skype account. A Skype account is not included with this phone.)
And by simply plugging your home telephone line into the VOIP841, this phone can double as your everyday landline, giving you the ultimate in convenience.
Easy to Use
If you’ve used a cell phone or cordless phone, you’ll quickly be able to take advantage of all the features the VOIP841 offers. For easy readability, the phone features a 128×128 full-color display, and a 4-way directional pad provides you with easy navigation through the intuitive interface. The handset has enough memory for up to 500 Skype phonebook entries, giving you quick access to your contact list.
You can choose from up to 15 ring tones (5 standard, 10 polyphonic), and the phone allows you to set your ring tone by call type, distinguishing between landline and Internet calls. A speakerphone mode allows for hands-free operation, so you can take notes during the call or share the call with others. There is also a jack connector on the handset for connecting a headset.
DECT Frequency for Security and Extended Battery Life
By using the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) frequency at 1.8GHz, the VOIP841 offers you enhanced security features and a longer battery life than other frequencies. On battery power, the VOIP841 offers talk time of up to 12 hours and a standby time of up to 120 hours.
Each base station can accommodate up to four handsets, and up to four base stations can be used together for a total of 16 handsets. For office or home use, the intercom mode allows you to use one handset to call another handset located in a different room.
User Ratings and Reviews
3 Stars Nice Phone, but does not work as it should all the time
I’m going to make this a short review of the problems this phone has. i give it 3.5 stars to rank it a little better than Average.
These are the problems I notice with the phone after having used it for a year.
1) It lags going through the menus.
2) Often you will have to reset the box because the phone goes into not available/no service mode. after unplugging/plugging back in power cord about 5 mins later the phone is able to be used again.
3) People have told me numerous times when they call it says “the user is unavailable” only to have to call back up to four times before it will go to Voicemail.
4) When trying to make a call, it will say connecting and then all of a sudden go back to the main screen. Usually on the 2nd attempt to dial out it works fine.
5)Even though you have a number saved in the phone book, when that person calls it displays the number and not their name as it should. Also the last 2-3 numbers scroll because the phone cannot even display the 1+area code+number.
6) There are other problems with the phone menu as well, some bugs in the software which Skype needs to work on fixing asap
Generally the phone works good about 90% of the time i would say.
The design of the phone of Great, Its very sleek and nice looking.
The BEST FEATURE i like about this skype phone is that there is a setting that allows only people in your phone book to call you…NO TELEMARKETERS WILL BE ABLE TO CALL YOU EVER AGAIN!
Another thing I can’t figure out is how the price of this phone is going up…I paid $180 for it a year ago, and that was with shipping i think.
If i could go back in time and buy it again, I wouldn’t unless it was priced at $100. This phone has too many problems to be selling for over $200!!
5 Stars Skype Internet Phone
Saves a whole bunch of money. A really good investment, especially if you ring internationally.
4 Stars Philips VOIP841 PC Free is the best! Why did they stop production?
The Philips VOIP841 is user friendly and allows Skype calls in and out plus landline useage all without having the PC on. Obviously, production had to be terminated once they hit upon something like this. The phone works great. Quality likewise. No complaints whatsoever. This is a first rate idea! My only problem is that Philips stopped production. The only phones available for VOIP useage require that the PC be “on”. I’ll keep the Philips 841 until it breathes its last gasp and then try and find another one just like it.
2 Stars Died in one year!
I purchased a new Phillips VOIP841C phone. Came with 1 phone and it’s modem.
The phone worked great for about 1 year. Now, it drags down my internet speeds and will drop the caller’s voice. They can hear me, but I cannot hear them, yet the connection is still present.
Restart the router and the Phillips Skype Modem and phone. I’ve rechecked all connections to cable modem, skype modem, router. Still have this issue.
Without skype modem connected to my router, I get download speeds of 13MB to 17MB. With this modem connected, I get download speeds of 350kb.
Testing with Pcpitstop, during the download test, 350kb seen, and while test is still running, unplug power to skype modem, download speeds increased to 13MB!
This did not happen when I first bought 1 year ago, and continued usage for that year. It worked great for that first year.
5 Stars Excellent, replaced my regular phone
After testing Skype itself (see other good reviews in this set on how Skype works) on a laptop for a month, we decided we liked it enough to get a Skype phone. After spending a lot of time comparing models on line, we got this one because it looked more like a regular phone (we don’t need a Skype phone that travels) and so hoped it would be comfortable to use. In fact, its form is clearly derived from the Philips landline phone we had before.
The phone has surpassed expectations. Its is easy to use. Once you set up your default area code, you can dial any local number just as on a landline phone. We only use Skype now, so we set the default line to Skype – you don’t have to choose Skype or landline. Unlike a regular phone, you can fill in your contacts (regular or Skype) in your on-line account. (There is a little software bug the web site tells you about – if you add more later, sign out and back into Skype to download the update).
We meant it mainly for day to day use (and we aren’t home much), but it works well in heavier applications too. I did a three hour conference call recently. The speaker works well, you can of course mute, and so on. Very comfortable and functional.
So aside from not being able to call 911 (cell phone will do that) we can’t find anything this thing can’t do, and it has nicely replaced our landline and landline costs. If you get a $30/year (year, not month) subscription for the US, a phone number only costs $30/year. So that is $60/year versus our old costs of $40/month or $80/year. If you don’t need a number, even less. Note you cannot port your landline number.
Highly recommended.
